This article was difficult write. It’s not because of the subject matter or any outside factors, it’s simply because my mind was blank. There were no major highlights in the past month that would ignite an idea that I felt destined to get down on paper. As I sit here and think about the past month, I’ve concluded that it was just normal. There was nothing overly exciting. Life just happened. Although normalcy can sometimes become a rut, there is comfort in the typical day.
The funny thing is, this month was exactly what I have always wanted in life. With our wedding date quickly approaching, my fiancé and I have settled into a routine of preparation for married life. We have spent our engagement considering finances, work schedules, and choosing a town to live in after marriage. In the past year it has all fallen together. There’s now a balance with few surprises. We are still living separate lives but we are settling into what will soon become the norm.
The past month, there have not been flowers or romantic mementos, although those things are all nice. This month has been filled with consistency, a routine, and the knowledge that he will be there when I need him. We are a team, working together to make a house a home in preparation for our lives combining. This working together and consistency of daily life creates deeper trust that leads to a deeper bond.
This routine we are settling into is exciting and fresh. I find joy in it but average days can easily become frustrating ruts. So now and always I must always strive to find the joy and not let the excitement and joy fade when these new typical days with my fiancé become just another typical day with my husband.
We must make a conscious effort to put aside the frustrations in life in order to focus on the blessings. Jacob is my blessing but sometimes in the midst of average days, blessings begin to feel normal and expected. So I challenge you, just as I require of myself, to take a fresh look at the one you love.
What is it that they do in an average day that is a blessing to you? What are the things that you hardly notice anymore because they do it consistently? It’s nice to have special things that only happen once in a while but the everyday blessings in marriage are an incredible gift that should not be overlooked.
