The Heartbeat of Life

12:44 AM is much later than I wanted to be ending my day. I lay in bed with my handy iPod and begin exploring the latest devotional I had found. It’s interesting, thought provoking and brings many questions that I then in turn ask God. So what’s the problem?

I am distracted by the beat of my heart. For all of you deep thinkers out there you’re probably trying to see the meaning behind my words. I’ll give you a hint: this is no metaphor. As I lay there pouring over God’s Word I find myself distracted because there’s this light thumping that in the quiet stillness I can barely detect and yet it’s all I hear.

Perhaps I should share with you that I have adult attention deficit disorder so the distraction described above doesn’t seem quite so absurd. So here I am trying to ignore the organ that keeps me alive to catch a glimpse of the One who gives me life. And in the annoyance of my daily struggle to focus I find God’s lesson for me:

The heartbeat of life is a major distraction.

We live in a high paced society of working, school, goals, frustrations, joys, disappointments, things you look forward to and things you dread. This is life. And this life that fills my days on Earth is the life that i find so distracting.

Life isn’t always a piece of cake and in a year I’ll be sharing this life with someone else. I’ll be a wife. It makes me wonder how all those great wives out there are so successful when faced with the distractions of life. How do I push it all away to be the wife to my husband that I desire to be?

My Grandma, Neoma Furmage, spent the last few years of her life struggling with dementia. Toward the end of her life, with her mind so childlike she still had something that she wanted to do: buy a blue shirt. Why? The answer was simple: because my Grandpa liked blue.

The truth is that buying all of the blue shirts in the world will never make me the perfect wife. But sometimes all it takes to make your beloved’s world feel perfect is simply taking time, in the midst of the distracting heart beat of life, to remember that his favorite color is blue.

So how do you become the wife that your beloved needs in this world of distractions? You simply try your best and leave the rest to God.

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
