In Marriage, are Contraceptives Biblical?

Q: In marriage, are contraceptives (condoms, specifically) biblical?

A: If you’re asking, “does the Bible speak directly to this issue?” The answer is “no.” The Bible doesn’t speak to a lot of what is going on in medical science today. Medications and cures etc. are not dealt with in the Bible because they were not there in biblical days. I think there are principles in the Bible but it doesn’t speak directly to this issue. That’s why sincere Christians disagree on whether or not to use contraceptives. Those on both sides feel rather strongly about their position.

On the one side they base it on the biblical statements that having children is a blessing from God and the man is blessed who has his quiver full of them. So they say you ought to have as many children as you can because they are blessings from God. And then there are those on the other side, who say that God gave us the responsibility for making decisions. In today’s world, different from an agricultural economy, having twelve children may not be a blessing—it may be difficult for you to even feed that many children in today’s world. So I think we need to give Christians the freedom to choose what is best for them, but the Bible does not address the issue directly.
