It’s the Small Things

This year for Independence Day, my husband, Steve, and I decided to take a step back from all of the travelling and craziness that has become our life. It’s tough with our families literally spread out all across the country. Plus, there are the jobs, errands, social outings, and a million other things that are always begging for our attention. So, we decided to make a concerted effort to lay low, relax a bit, and just enjoy some quality time together.

What a great idea that was. While we love doing fun and exciting things together, we have quickly come to appreciate the smaller things in life. Maybe it’s just hanging out on the couch talking, sitting side-by-side reading books, or taking a nice long walk together. These things have become some of my favorite moments.

We easily overlook and take for granted these ordinary moments, but they are what really make up this life we are living. Sure, the special and extraordinary events and outings are spectacular too. But those nights sitting on the deck talking about anything and everything, unloading the dishwasher together for the millionth time, and the quiet moments spent cuddled up together watching our favorite show … that’s what life is made of. That’s the good stuff.

It’s easy to fail to notice these seemingly insignificant occasions, but I would encourage you to stop and take notice. Think about them, savor them, and realize that that’s what life is … a bunch of small moments stitched together into the larger quilt of life. If we value the small things, we get the essence of life, which in turn produces an invaluable appreciation for it.

What are some of your favorite or most memorable “small” moments?
