A Couple of Couples

Want to spice up your romantic relationship? No need to spend money on long-stem roses or expensive dinners. Instead, spend time — not just with each other but with some really good friends. Recent research in the journal Personal Relationships shows that dating couples who hang out with couple-friends wind up feeling closer to each other.

In her recent article in Time’s The Healthland, Bonnie Rochman discussed how spending time with other couples can have a positive effect on a relationship. The article was based on a current study conducted by Richard Slatcher, an assistant professor of psychology at Wayne State University, who delved into the subject inspired by his own marriage. He determined that there was indeed a connection between double-dating and improved relational satisfaction.

Personally, I believe this to be true. When my husband and I joined a small group through our church with three other couples, we quickly discovered it greatly enriched our marriage. The presence of other happily married couples is inspiring and encouraging to be around. We have also found it helps keep us accountable to one another. All around it is a wonderful and enhancing experience.

What are your thoughts? Have you found this to be true or false in your relationship?
